Nenhum animal amazônico é objeto de tantas histórias quanto o boto. Acreditam os folcloristas que as lendas não têm origem indígena, ao contrário do que se pensa, mas teriam sido criadas pela imaginação do colono português.

Boto é o personagem mitológico da Amazônia que se transforma de cetáceo em homem para praticar estripulias entre as mulheres ribeirinhas. Seduz as moças que vivem às margens dos cursos d'água amazônicos e é responsável por todos os filhos de paternidade ignorada.
